La guía del British Council lo resume así: «Make sure you answer all three questions».

- Tell me about a time when you tried to learn a foreign language.
- How did you feel about it?
- What are some of the reasons people decide to learn another language?
Respuesta modelo (nivel C1)
Well, the first time I seriously tried to learn a foreign language was when I was nineteen. I'd just started university, and I signed up for French evening classes, mainly because I'd always dreamt of spending a year abroad. At first it was far harder than I'd expected. I remember spending hours on verb tables, only to freeze the moment I had to order a coffee in front of a real French speaker.
As for how I felt, I'd say it was a roller coaster. I was really frustrated at the beginning, and there were weeks when I nearly gave up. Had it not been for my teacher, who kept insisting that making mistakes was part of the process, I would probably have quit. Looking back, what I feel most is pride, because once I could hold a proper conversation, it was incredibly rewarding.
Turning to why people decide to learn another language, I think the main reason is career prospects. Not only does speaking another language make you stand out in a competitive job market, it also opens doors abroad. Another factor is personal growth: the more languages people speak, the better they understand other cultures and, in a sense, themselves. And for many, it's simply a matter of necessity, for instance when they move to another country with their family. All in all, it's an investment that pays off in many different ways.

1. Condicional inverso
«Had it not been for my teacher, who kept insisting that making mistakes was part of the process, I would probably have quit.»
Es un condicional inverso. Se quita el «if» y se invierte el orden: «had», «it», «not», «been». La forma es: had, más sujeto, más «been for», y después «would have» y participio. El calco del español es decir «if it wouldn't be for», que no existe.
2. Inversión tras «not only»
«Not only does speaking another language make you stand out in a competitive job market, it also opens doors abroad.»
Cuando la frase empieza por «not only», el auxiliar va delante del sujeto: «does», y luego «speaking». Después se completa con «it also». El error típico es decir «not only speaking another language makes you», sin invertir el orden.
3. Comparativos paralelos
«The more languages people speak, the better they understand other cultures and, in a sense, themselves.»
Además, «in a sense» matiza la afirmación.
4. Conectores para organizar
«As for how I felt, I'd say it was a roller coaster. Turning to why people decide to learn another language, I think the main reason is career prospects.»
