Se una domanda comincia con "What I find most challenging about my PhD ____" e non sai se chiude con "is", "to be" o "being", sei davanti a una frase scissa (cleft). Servono a dare enfasi, e in italiano esistono strutture simili: "Quello che mi serve è...".

La regola

  • What-cleft: What + soggetto + verbo + is/was + elemento enfatizzato. (What she needed was moral support.)
  • It-cleft: It is/was + elemento enfatizzato + that + resto. (It is in these areas that the initiative is needed most.)
  • Cleft inversa: l'elemento enfatizzato viene prima, poi "is what". (Moral support is what she needed.)

Quando si usa

Per mettere in primo piano un'idea. Compare in testi formali e accademici, livelli alti.

Esempi

  • What she needed was moral support.
  • What the report highlights above all else is the need for reform.
  • It is in these remote, rural areas that the healthcare initiative is needed most.
  • What I find most challenging is the sheer volume of reading.

Errore tipico

Omettere il verbo "is": "What I find most challenging about my PhD the sheer volume..." oppure usare "being" o "to be" al posto di "is". Nell'it-cleft, usare "what" o "which" al posto di "that" perché in italiano diremmo "dove" o "che".

Trucco

Trappola nelle domande a scelta multipla

Domanda: What I find most challenging about my PhD ____ the sheer volume of literature I need to review. Opzioni: is / to be / being Risposta corretta: is Spiegazione: il verbo "is" serve a collegare la clausola introdotta da "What" con l'elemento enfatizzato.

Domanda: ______ she needed was moral support. Opzioni: Which / What / That Risposta corretta: What Spiegazione: frase scissa (cleft): "What + soggetto + verbo".

Domanda: It is in these remote, rural areas ____ the new government healthcare initiative is needed most. Opzioni: what / that / which Risposta corretta: that Spiegazione: anche se si enfatizza un luogo, la struttura "It is..." richiede "that" per collegare le due parti.

La trappola: "which" e "what" suonano naturali, ma nella frase scissa il legame è "that".
