Un condicional se puede escribir sin if si inviertes el auxiliar: Should you need help, Were I you y Had I known.

La inversión sustituye a if.

If you need help, call me.Should you need help, call me.posible, formal (first)
If I were you, I would accept. Were I you, I would accept.irreal en presente (second)
If I had known, I would have called.Had I known, I would have called.irreal en pasado (third)

Solo hay tres auxiliares que lo permiten: should, were y had. No existe esta inversión con will ni con would.

Should + sujeto + verbo base

Sustituye a if + presente. La oración principal suele llevar imperativo, will o can.

  • Should you need any help, please contact us.
  • Should it rain, the event will be held indoors.

Were + sujeto (+ to + verbo)

Sustituye a if + pasado, el segundo condicional.

  • Con to be: Were I you, I would accept the offer. («Si yo fuera tú…»).
  • Con otro verbo, se añade to: Were she to arrive late, we would start without her. El were to da un matiz de hecho poco probable.
  • Con it: Were it not for the rain, we would go to the beach. («Si no fuera por la lluvia…»).

Con otros verbos no vale Were she arrive: hace falta Were she to arrive.

Had + sujeto + participio

Sustituye a if + past perfect, el tercer condicional. La principal lleva would have + participio.

  • Had I known, I would have called.
  • Had we left earlier, we would have caught the train.

También se usa en el mixto, cuando el resultado es de ahora: Had I studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.

La negación

La negación se escribe sin contraer: Had I not left early, I would have missed the train. No se dice Hadn't I left. Lo mismo con Should you not… y Were it not for…

Las tres trampas del hispanohablante

  1. Mantener el if. If had I known es un error: la inversión sustituye a if. Lo correcto es Had I known.
  2. Contraer la negación. Hadn't I known no se usa. Escribe Had I not known.
  3. Poner mal la forma verbal. Should you will need, Had I know y Were she arrive son errores. Lo correcto: Should you need, Had I known y Were she to arrive.
Ojo

Dos usos naturales son el cierre de un email formal (Should you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me) y una condición irreal en un artículo (Had I known about the deadline, I would have applied earlier).
