What the Aptis Writing part is like

Aptis General Writing has 4 parts and lasts 50 minutes. Each task asks for a different length and a different register.

  • Part 1, word-level writing: you answer five messages with single words, from 1 to 5 words each. No sentences.
  • Part 2, short text writing: you give personal information in 20 to 30 words.
  • Part 3, three written responses: you answer three questions on a social-network-style page, 30 to 40 words each.
  • Part 4, formal and informal writing: two emails, first the informal one (40 to 50 words) and then the formal one (120 to 150 words).

Each task is marked on its own scale: 0 to 3 in Part 1, 0 to 5 in Parts 2 and 3, and 0 to 6 in Part 4. The skill is scored out of 50 and the British Council places it on the CEFR scale.

Questions about this test

Is this the official Aptis test?

No. The format follows the real exam, but the questions are our own. Only the British Council issues the Aptis certificate.

Do I get my correction straight away?

Yes. When you submit, AptisBot marks your texts with AI and shows feedback and an estimated level. It is our estimate, not an official score, and there is a daily limit on automatic corrections.

Do I need an account?

Not for the first test. a Google sign-in only saves your attempt so you can compare it with the next one.
