1/2The task: he, she or both

You hear a man and a woman talking about learning English with apps. There are four questions, and for each opinion you decide whether he, she or both express it. Read what you have on screen before the audio starts.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.Who speaks in Part 3?
2.How many questions are there and what do you decide in each?
3.Where does the difficulty of this part lie?

2/2The answers and the signals

In the exercise: the first opinion is both (he says his vocabulary has grown and she answers I say the same about vocabulary); the second is only his (he defends streaks: the streak is the only reason I've lasted six months); the third is only hers (recognizing a word and using it are not the same thing); and the fourth is again both, because he closes it with on that we agree.

The signals of agreement are I say the same, exactly and on that we agree; the signals of disagreement, Well, I'm not sure or Fine, but…, point to an opinion held by just one of them.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.Which signals show that both say it?
2.Which signals show disagreement, that is, an opinion held by just one?
3.Who defends the app's streaks?
Put it all together

Now, practise

While you listen to a dialogue, note an H, a W or a B for each opinion (him, her, both). Underline the expression that made you decide: “I say the same”, “exactly”, “fine, but”…
