14 min video (Spanish narration)2 mini-quizzesB2–C1

1/2The task: attitude and intention

Part 4 is two monologues with two questions each. Here you are not asked for details: you are asked for the speaker's attitude or intention. In the exercise, a teacher talks about her experience with an English certificate.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.How many monologues are there and how many questions per monologue?
2.What are you asked in Part 4?
3.In the exercise, what does the teacher talk about?

2/2Listen for the buts, the contrasts and the tone

The answer to the first question is not in a single word, it is in the contrast: Everyone assumed I was confident. I wasn't. When someone says everyone assumed…, a denial usually follows.

The second question is answered by the ending: Book it for three months' time and practice the parts you avoid. Listen for the buts, the contrasts and the tone.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.Where is the answer to the first question?
2.What usually follows “everyone assumed…”?
3.What does the teacher recommend about when to book the exam?

·How to keep practising

To keep practising, do Listening with different audios each time and note, for each answer, the sentence in the audio that decides it, as in these examples.

Put it all together

Now, practise

Listen to a monologue and, before looking at the options, write in one line what stance the person takes. Note down the “buts” and contrasts that made you see it.
