14 min video (Spanish narration)2 mini-quizzesB1–B2

1/2The task: four speakers and six pieces of information

Four people explain why they are sitting an English exam. You have to match each one with the right piece of information. There are six pieces of information and two are not used.

Before the audio starts, read what you have on screen: that way you know what to listen for in each speaker.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.How many speakers and how many pieces of information are there in Part 2?
2.What about the two pieces of information that are left over?
3.What do you do before the audio starts?

2/2The answers and the strategy

Speaker 1 (A): is still at school, but needs the certificate for next September's bilingual programme. Speaker 2 (B): the move to Dublin depends on the certificate. Speaker 3 (C): says literally that nobody asks for it; they want to have it before they need it. Speaker 4 (D): is retaking because they missed a B2 by one point.

E (university) and F (the pay rise) are left over: nobody says them. The strategy: match the ones you are sure of first and leave the doubtful ones for last, because each correct match eliminates an option.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.Why does speaker 1 need the certificate?
2.What is speaker 4's reason?
3.What strategy does the video give for this part?
Put it all together

Now, practise

Before listening, read the six options and underline the key word in each. As you hear each speaker, match only the ones you are sure of and leave the doubtful ones for last.
