·How the video works

In the video you do real exercises from the General Listening, one for each part of the exam and in the exact format. First you see the question and listen to the audio with no help, as in the exam; then the answer is given and, above all, the sentence in the audio that decides it.

1/4The format: 40 minutes, 4 parts and 25 questions

The General Listening lasts 40 minutes, has four parts and 25 questions. Part 1 is short monologues and dialogues from which you have to pick out a detail: a number, a time or a place. Part 2 is four speakers you have to match with six written pieces of information, so you have two left over. Part 3 is a dialogue between a man and a woman with four questions. Part 4 is two monologues with two questions each.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.How many parts and questions does the General Listening have, and how long does it last?
2.What is asked in Part 1?
3.What do you decide in Part 3?

2/4How many times each audio plays

What almost nobody mentions: in General, all four parts can be heard twice. In Advanced they cannot: there, Parts 3 and 4 play only once.

This means that on the first listen you risk nothing: get the general idea and save the second listen to confirm the exact detail you are asked about.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.How many times can each part be heard in General?
2.What happens in Parts 3 and 4 of Advanced?
3.How is it best to use the two listens?

3/4Part 1: voicemail

The exercise is a voicemail from a language centre: the exam is on Thursday the 16th, you have to arrive at 8:30 because registration closes at 9:00, the exam starts at 9:15 and you have to bring your ID.

The other three times also play in the audio, and that is why they are among the options. In Part 1, the distractor is almost always another number from the same audio: do not settle for the first one you hear, settle for the one that answers the question.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.In the audio, what time do you have to arrive?
2.What is the distractor usually in Part 1?
3.What do you do when you hear several numbers?
Put it all together

Now, practise

Listen to a voicemail or a short dialogue and, before looking at the options, note down all the numbers you hear. Then choose only the one that answers the question.
