Aptis for Teachers in Uzbekistan: Recognition and Pay

Is Aptis accepted for English teachers in Uzbekistan? What the official list says, the B2 rule for state schools, the pay supplement and the result times.

If you teach English in Uzbekistan, you probably need an English certificate for hiring, for the pay supplement, or both. The question is simple: does Aptis count? Here is what the official documents say, what is only reported by the media, and what you must check yourself. Back to home.

Does Aptis appear on the official list?

Yes, in the version we checked. The list of national and international certificates that prove language level is published on lex.uz (document 6943986, amended in 2025). It names two Aptis variants:

  • Aptis ESOL for Teachers, reported from A1 to C1.
  • Aptis ESOL Advanced, reported from B1 to C2.

The previous list (registered with the Ministry of Justice under No. 3318 on 07.09.2021) was replaced by a new list valid from 29.05.2024. Aptis stayed on it. In the lists we read, Aptis ESOL General is not named. If you plan to take General, ask your employer or the ministry in writing before you book.

Being named in a law does not mean every school or every procedure accepts it. Always check the document that applies to your case.

What level do you need?

  • B2 is the minimum for a newly hired foreign-language teacher in a state school. This comes from Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 312 (19.05.2021). The start date was moved to the 2023/2024 school year, and the rule has been applied with several relaxations.
  • C1 is the next step if you already have B2.
  • C2 is certified only by Aptis Advanced. For most teachers, B2 or C1 is enough.

The pay supplement

According to media reports from January 2025, teachers with an internationally recognised certificate kept a 50% supplement on the base rate. From 1 January 2025 the supplement fell to 20% for teachers who hold only a national certificate. These percentages are set by state acts and change over time. The rules for the tests that give the supplement are on lex.uz (documents 2261221 and 4672425). Check them, and ask your accounts office, before you decide.

How the exam works

Aptis for Teachers has five parts: Core (Grammar and Vocabulary), Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. It is taken on a computer. Each skill gets a score out of 50 and a CEFR level. Results are published 48 to 72 hours after the exam date, not counting weekends and holidays. The certificate is printed within 10 working days after publication. Both facts come from the British Council FAQ of 2023, so confirm the current times when you book.
