Official Aptis cut scores by skill: B2 and C1 in General and Advanced (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), plus for Teachers and for Teens.
Each Aptis skill is scored out of 50, and each level starts at a different cut score. There is no single B2 score: it depends on the skill and on the variant. These are the official figures. See the home page for other guides.
| A1 | A2 | B1 | B2 | C | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 8 | 16 | 24 | 34 | 42 |
| Reading | 8 | 16 | 26 | 38 | 46 |
| Writing | 6 | 18 | 26 | 40 | 48 |
| Speaking | 4 | 16 | 26 | 41 | 48 |
Read each figure as the starting point of that level. For B2 you need 34 in Listening, 38 in Reading, 40 in Writing and 41 in Speaking. Speaking has the highest cut.
| B1 | B2 | C1 | C2 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 14 | 24 | 38 | 50 |
| Reading | 16 | 28 | 40 | 50 |
| Writing | 22 | 37 | 44 | 50 |
| Speaking | 22 | 37 | 44 | 50 |
The Advanced measures B1 to C2, so it has no A1 or A2. Scores and levels are not comparable between variants: 24 in Advanced Listening is not equal to 24 in General Listening.
The global level is not the sum of points. It is the rounded average of the four skill levels. Three B2 and one B1 give a global B2. It is awarded only if you do all four skills. Some institutions look at each skill separately: there, a single B1 can leave you out.
If your score in a skill falls just below a cut, the system looks at the Core: if your Core is strong, the system can move you up to the next level. Two people with the same score can receive different levels.
What score do I need for B2 in Aptis General? 34 in Listening, 38 in Reading, 40 in Writing and 41 in Speaking, out of 50.
And for C1? In the General, the highest level is reported as "C" (42, 46, 48 and 48). In the Advanced, C1 starts at 38, 40, 44 and 44.
Can I pass or fail? No. Aptis gives a level per skill.
Do these cuts change? The General was reviewed in 2020 and for Teachers in 2023. We use version 2.1 of the official document.
