Listening Part 2: opinion and attitude

Aptis Advanced Listening Part 2: three monologues with two questions each, the final twist in the speaker's opinion and how to spot it, with mini-quizzes.

1/2The task: an architect and working from home

You hear an architect talking about working from home. There are two questions with three options each. Be careful: you are not asked what she says, but what she thinks. As in the rest of Parts 1 and 2, you can hear it twice.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.What are you asked in Part 2?
2.How many questions and options does the exercise have?
3.What does the person in the audio talk about?

2/2The answer: the final twist

The first answer: she has changed her mind. She says so with an expression you must recognise in the Advanced: I've had to eat my words, which means to retract. If you held on to I was one of the loudest voices against it, you heard the beginning and not the end.

The second: what worries her is that juniors no longer learn by listening to the veterans argue. The other options are things the audio does mention, but it says the opposite (the plans are still just as good and the team is happier).

In this part there is almost always a twist: the person starts by saying one thing and ends up on another, and the question is about the end.

Check what you have learnt

You need 2 out of 3
1.Which expression shows that the architect has changed her mind?
2.What really worries her?
3.Which pattern is typical of Part 2?
Put it together

Now, practise

Listen to a monologue and note how the person starts and how they end. Answer what the ending asks, not what you heard first.
